Printing bigger than your printer

A poster split across ordinary sheets works well, provided you get one setting right and do not let the driver help.

A plan, a chart or a poster larger than the paper you own is a solved problem: enlarge it, cut it into tiles, print one tile per sheet, tape them together.

It works well. It fails in exactly one way, repeatedly, and the failure is always the same.

Turn off fit-to-page

Tiling assumes each sheet prints at exactly the size it says. Almost every printer driver defaults to scaling documents to fit the printable area — a reduction of a few percent, invisible on a normal document, and fatal here.

Scale each tile by ninety-seven percent and every tile is three percent too small. The overlaps no longer line up, and the error accumulates across the poster: by the fourth tile you are out by more than a centimetre.

Print at 100%, actual size, no scaling. If your tiles do not match, check this before anything else. It is the cause almost every time.

Overlap is not waste

Each tile carries a margin of shared content along the edges it meets. It looks like duplication and it is what makes assembly possible: you have something to tape onto, and a few millimetres of tolerance for cutting slightly off the line.

Without overlap, every join has to be exact, and the joins are visible as hairline gaps wherever they are not.

Ten millimetres is a comfortable default. More on a large poster where the sheets are heavy and the cumulative alignment is harder.

Cut guides

Marks showing where the overlap begins turn "cut roughly here" into "cut on the line". Trim one edge of each sheet and butt it against the untrimmed overlap of its neighbour — that gives you one clean edge per join rather than two approximate ones.

Working out the size

Sheets across is the setting you choose; rows follow from the shape of the page. A landscape chart three sheets across might need two rows; a portrait poster three across might need four.

Bear in mind what enlargement does to the source. A poster assembled from a vector PDF stays crisp at any size. One assembled from a 150 DPI scan enlarged four times is a 37 DPI image, and will look it.

The related trick, in reverse

The same imposition machinery run the other way puts several pages on one sheet. Four to a page turns a forty-page deck into ten sheets for review; sixteen makes a reference sheet you can pin up but not read comfortably.
