Analyse a PDF's File Size

See how big a PDF is and where the weight is likely to be.

How it works

Reports the total size and, more usefully, the size per page — which tells you almost immediately what kind of document you have. Under about 40 KB a page is text, and compressing it will not help. Over about 120 KB a page with no text layer is a scan, and compressing it will help a great deal.

Questions

Why is size per page more useful than the total?
Because it distinguishes a long text document from a short scan, which is what decides whether compression is worth trying.
My PDF is huge. What now?
If it is a scan, compress it. If it is text, the size is probably fonts or embedded files, and compression will not help.
Does this change my file?
No. It only reports.
